Dracula, The Legacy Collection
Universal Studios starring: Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr. among others.
Black & White, 5 films on 2 discs, Subtitled, Box set

More than a century after publication of Bram Stoker’s original novel, the vampire fantasy continues to hold us spellbound. A dreary castle in Transylvania, Romania – bloodsucking vampires – open graves – we still want to read about it and see it.

There is a bounty of riches in these discs that you’ll get to see and hear with the original score as well as a more modern version by Phil Glass and performed by the famous Kronos Quartet. Also, the Spanish version filmed at the same time, using the same sets, has been sought after for years. What more can you ask? Well there are a few extra surprises as well. After all, legends never die. Why not have a scary movie night in your back yard for your next Halloween or Mardi Gras costume party.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Sony Pictures (1992) with stars Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves; Director: Francis Ford Coppola
1 disc; English, French, Spanish with subtitles.

This fresh, exuberant version of Stoker’s Dracula is a love story for hopeless romantics. It helps if you’ve read the book. Although the film tries to capture the book, the emphasis has been shifted from a horror tale to an impossible love story.

The film is tongue-in-cheek. Count Dracula can’t stop feeding off the living and Van Helsing can’t stop trying to do away with Dracula. Dracula’s love interest, Mina, is promised to another. For the women, there’s passion and longing. For the men there are high speed horseback chases and gore — the fangs have to come out at some point. There is something for everyone.

If you’ve read Bram Stoker’s Dracula, you’re aware of many concepts of vampires like they shun garlic and count seeds. Vampires have been known to turn into bats so they can hover outside a victim’s window. It was written that Count Dracula’s castle in Transylvania had no mirrors. The original concept was that vampires have no reflections but traditional folklore indicated that mirrors reveal the soul.

When you and your kids decide that you want to pretend to be vampires and get costumes to wear at a Halloween party or trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, please make sure to do two things:  a) tuck a crucifix somewhere on your person and b) get from Dracula Costumes.org — the most comprehensive resource for vampire costumes and accessories.

Legend has it that being near one caused a real vampire to lose his or her supernatural strength. You’ll want to protect yourself from the real thing thinking you’re the real thing, too. It will make the children feel better. Just thinking about the children. Right?

The main character in Bram Stoker’s late 1900’s gothic novel, Dracula, was roughly based on Vlad Tepes, The Impaler. Did you know that Dracula means “son of the dragon?” And the word “Tepes” was derived from the practice of impaling your enemies. Vlad’s father was a member of the Order of the Dragon and “Dracul” which is derived from the Latin for Draco means dragon. In modern Romanian, it now means “devil” which is not far removed from what the cruel character of Dracula represents.

Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, spent seven years researching folklore and vampires. Although his gothic novel based in Romania’s Transylvania is the most famous of the vampire tales, it does date back to 1897. At one time in history, Romania was part of Hungary, Austria and even the Ottoman Empire.

The more recent books about vampires are called the Twilight series and appeal more to today’s readers. Stephenie Meyer’s four vampire based fantasy romance novels are written about vampire and human teens that fall in love. Started in 2005, the most recent film based on her novel, Twilight Saga: Eclipse, will be released in theaters in June 2010.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Optimized for Kindle)

This is a 100th anniversary edition of Bran Stoker’s Dracula. There are excerpts from materials that he researched and criticisms on how Count Dracula deals with female sexuality, gender inversions and Victorian fears. It is one of the few horror novels honored in the Norton Critical Edition series that includes Frankenstein.

Although the critics say that the bloodsucking Dracula was outrageously cruel, they also say he wasn’t as bad as the prince on which his character was based – Vlad, the Impaler. Vlad impaled all of his enemies and left them to die a slow death. A Papal envoy from Budapest, Hungary wrote that Dracula massacred 40,000 people of all nationalities and ages, including young children. Gabriele Rangone, Bishop of Erlau said that Dracula ordered the murders of 100,000 people. We will never know.

Rated for kids from grade seven and up, this classic fantasy has a ring of believability and adult lovers of horror mysteries will also enjoy this version.

We think you’ll have the most fun reading Bram Stoker’s book named Dracula or the recent Twilight series of books to your kids, describing his castle in Transylvania as well as his escapades. Stoker’s original vampire is loosely based on Vlad Tepes, the Impaler, who was a Romanian prince and not quite as bloodthirsty.

Make sure you tell your young boys and girls that if a vampire shows up, you know what to do. You’ll drive a stake of ash or aspen wood through his heart during the daylight hours. In Romania, red hot bars would accomplish the same thing. They you’ll burn his body and bury it at a crossroads. They have nothing to worry about. Or do they?
